History

GCA was formed in 1967 when it was apparent that Baltimore would lose its Ladies' Professional Golf Association (LPGA) golf tournament. A group of golfers was asked to promote and run the tournament in order to keep it as a civic event. They agreed to do it, but only if all of the proceeds went to charity. Accordingly, they selected the name "Golfers' Charitable Association" as the group's title.

In order to assure that there would be sufficient funds to cover expenses, each member of GCA donated $1,000.00. For that he received only the privilege and satisfaction of working for a good cause. None of the officers, directors or members of GCA receive any financial compensation for their work. They and the other volunteer workers (over 700 of them over the years) give many hours of their time and effort solely for the satisfaction of having worked for a unique civic and charitable cause.

The Golfers' Charitable Association sponsored LPGA  tournaments from 1967 through 1980. These tournaments were held at the Pine Ridge Golf Course. In 1983 and 1984, GCA sponsored the Greater Baltimore Open at Hillendale Country Club. This tournament was a PGA Tour event sanctioned by the USGA. The prime recipient for eight years was the Children's Hospital of Maryland. The Children's Rehabilitation Clinic at Children's Hospital was established by the GCA.

Since 1987, The Golfers' Charitable Association has sponsored a "Scramble for Kids" golf tournament. The Mid-Atlantic golf professionals from the country clubs in the greater Baltimore area have participated in this tournament. The Board of Directors and GCA's many members have supported this venture since its inception.

Over the years, GCA has funded a Nutrition Center Metabolic Kitchen as well as an indoor-outdoor recreational therapy area at the John F. Kennedy Institute, the conversion of a complete ward into private rooms for treatment of dwarfism for the Children's Hospital, as well as countless other projects benefiting children.  In total, GCA has given over $2,400,000 in donations.

GCA's mission to fund and support causes related to childrens charities remains anchored in intention and purpose.  It is the hope of its Board of Directors that GCA's footprint will continue to broaden in the time ahead - and that additional avenues of impact will be revealed through the collective efforts of its supporters.
